They should have set an example of Rinaldo. His behavior, statements and lack of remorse show he’s not going to stop, perhaps even if he hurts someone. Is that what needs to happen before the League does something more than a petty fine?
If they were really as serious about protecting players as they say, they’d try to nip guys like him in the bud.
Dear Santa,
I’d like to get my Christmas wish out of the way early this year, since you’ll probably need all the time you can find to make it come true. I’d sure like to have a job where I can get paid $7.5M to not do what I am being paid to do. One year is fine, if you can hook me up for that deal long-term, all the better.
Thanks big guy.

I’m not going to lie to you. It felt good and I’m going to do whatever is in my power possible to stay there as long as I can. - Petr Sykora on playing on a line with Elias and Parise.
Back when we lost Gomez, I was ticked off.
Now, I just look at him and laugh. Imagine that.
Proud supporter of a New York baseball team and a Boston football team. Yeah, deal with it!

What, they don’t have direct deposit in Canada?
It still irritates me that Montreal took that contract from the Rangers.
We saw a lot of bad contracts get moved this summer.
It doesn’t bother me so much that Montreal GM Pierre Gauthier decided to one-up Glen Sather in the stupid department. It bothers me that he gave Our Hated Rivals quality assets in return for him and not just cap relief. In particular, Ryan McDonough (who I can’t hate because he’s a U.Wisconsin alum).
Pierre Gauthier became GM on February 8, 2010.
On June 30, 2009, Gomez was traded with other detritus for some competent players.
Quoth then GM, Bob Gainey,
“He is an outstanding playmaker and an excellent skater. He brings to our team a lot of playoff experience. Scott is an elite player who will certainly contribute to the success of our team for years to come.”

he’s contributing to their success… at failing for Nail.

He may have overstated the ‘elite’ part, but he wasn’t necessarily wrong in his assessment… he just left out the “vastly overpaid” part.
With that contract he’s expected to score, too, but that was never really the strongest part of his game.
Scoring or not, 7 assists is an embarrassment for a $7M+ man.
I’m sure people would still gripe, but I’d prefer a 20-70-90 season from Kovy over 40-30-70.
I was fine with Gomez scoring under 20 goals for all but one season here because he was getting all of the helpers on someone else’s goal. Whether you get a goal or an assist, it still results in a goal.

It irritates me more that they took that contract and gave back something worthwhile.

Scott gomez
I know that you guys don’t like Gomez for how he ditched New Jersey but I really like him because he was one of the main reasons that I became a Devils fan. When I was little I went to a Devils pens game in 02 ( i was 8 years old) and Gomez flipped me a puck on the glass. I didn’t grow up in NJ but I started to try to follow the Devils after that (and I liked Marty a lot). I may be the only one, but I still wish him the best of luck and thank him for getting me to root for the Devils.

That's cool, I can respect that.
It’s true that lots of people feel abandoned, betrayed, and disrespected by Scott Gomez.
I wasn’t too surprised that he left New Jersey, but when you chase the almighty dollar… to play for A DIVISION RIVAL, you deserve the boos and, frankly, hatred that comes your way. (I assume) He had the chance to become a franchise player, like Elias or Brodeur. But he walked away, only to become a shell of his former self… like so many before him who have stars in their eyes for the New York Rangers.
I’m glad that he turned you on to the Devils, but a few years later he turned a lot of people off. It’s been downhill since for him, and I don’t feel the least bit bad about that.
"Smart guy, that William Shakespeare."
It didn’t bother me that Gomez walked away — it was obvious the entire year that Gomez wanted out of New Jersey and away from “Father” Lou and the discipline imposed upon him by the organization (both on-ice and off-ice). It didn’t bother me that he took the biggest offer on the table.
Normally, it wouldn’t even bother me that he went to the Rangers, because our rivals have a history of overspending on free agents who promptly collapse under the bright lights of Broadway and the World’s Most Overrated Arena. The only reason it did bother me that Gomez went to the Blueshirts is because he spent the entire year loudly telling anyone who would listen that he’d never play for the Rangers…. only he promptly signed with them at 12:01 on July 1st.
We’ve seen free agents depart. We’ve seen them chase dollars. We’ve seen them cross the Hudson River to play for Our Hated Rivals. I consider that all par for the course in modern professional sports and liberalized free agency. I just get rubbed the wrong way by someone who is such a profound liar (even though I’m used to it) because I place a lot of value on honesty and integrity.
Ilya Kovalchuk has been named the 2nd star of the week.
Stupid Gagner and his 8 point game and 11 straight points.

Love that “selfish” Kovalchuk notches 7 apples and fights for his captain all in one week.
