New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers - Gamethread #53

New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers, Feb 7, 2012 7:00 PM EST

The Time: 7:00 PM EDT

The Broadcast: TV - MSG+2 (MSG if you want Rangers commentary for some strange reason); Radio - 660 AM WFAN

The Game: The New Jersey Devils (30-19-3) at the New York Rangers (33-12-5)

The Previews: My preview from much earlier this morning is right here. Please check that out if you haven't yet. Bryan Winters has these keys to the game over at Blueshirt Banter.

A Song for Tonight: This is Fury of Five. They are a hardcore band originally from, I think, Asbury Park. They have certainly made their mark on the scene, as it were. From their second album At War with the World, this is "Takin' Respect." As they say, Jersey will not be disgraced.

Gameday Info: Oh, good grief, Cam Janssen will be in the lineup according to this post by Tom Gulitti at Fire & Ice. I can (sort of) appreciated that Janssen's amped for this game and it's not like Brad Mills (who has sent down to Albany) has been a difference maker on the fourth line, but is there any reason to believe Janssen will play more than 5 mintues tonight? Well, Ilya Kovalchuk hasn't played 25+ minutes in two games so I guess he should be good to eat the extra minutes when he's eventually double shifted. As for the Rangers, they're erring on the side of beef on defense. While Steve Eminger is available, Stu Bickel will stay in the line up as reported by Andrew Gross in this post and confirmed in this tweet by Gross.

As usual, you can use the comments in this post to discuss tonight's game before, during, and after it happens until the recap is up. Please remember the rules at all times. Namely: keep your comments clean, keep them on topic, and keep them legal (read: nothing about illegal streams - no links, no discussion, no requests). Go Devils!

Well, as long as there are games relevant to the Devils. If there are other games that involve WC teams or between EC bottom feeders, probably not.

You can also watch MSG if you’d prefer seeing the game in HD instead of the crappy regular feed for some reason.

Hello from the most overrated arena in the world. Atmosphere here with regards to other devils fans is the best from what I remember of the past two seasons.

We’re sparking some pretty nice let’s go devils chants thanks to the fact that most of the fans in our section have no idea whats going on and could seemingly care less if we audibly dominate them cheering against the home team.

What a scar by clarkson from an absolutely beautiful feed and start of the play by Zach.

Nice of the refs to reward the rags with a pp after Dubinskys dive. Nice of them to let del zotto punch and cross check volchenkov in the side of the head.

Oh yeah, can anyone say two fights at the same time from the opening face off? I’ve never seen it before at a devils game. Thought cam deserves props for a draw with Rupp and Boulton drew blood from Prust so that’s a win.

Great game so far

Devils up 11-9 in shots, 1-0 on the scoreboard, and they look more in control of this game, save for a few moments here and there.

Devils are also a +8 in Corsi and +7 in Fenwick. The Zubrus line has been the most positive, believe it or not.

Absolutely. I accept that tickets are expensive and that many sports have changed in that “regular” (?) fans can’t get good seats anymore. It irks when Rags fans try to make a show of it, as if it means something that an 85 year old team in America’s largest city has fans.

Second period over

Rangers kept whiffing, Devils strong early but faded late. It’s still 1-0; Devils still out-shooting the Rangers (21-14); out-doing them in Corsi at +8. Yet, if the Devils can tighten up their passing, then they could be doing so much more offensively.

Martin Brodeur is playing excellent hockey. He’s putting on a clinic on how to play the puck as a goalie.

I just had a thought. A big reason why Brodeur looks so good playing the puck is that the Rangers keep dumping it in and trying to chase. Brodeur has neutralized this for the most part. If DeBoer needs to prepare for one adjustment, then it should be this one. Surely, the Rangers aren’t going to keep at it until it magically works, right?

Yeah, that would do it. Look at me — I grew up with Nets’ season tickets. It was the dark, distant, slightly damp 1980s, and a good Nets season was 26-56. They didn’t get good until I went off to college.

69.3 Contact Inside the Goal Crease – If an attacking player initiates contact with a goalkeeper, incidental or otherwise, while the goalkeeper is in his goal crease, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed.

Further ref clarification notes here too: http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26557.

1. THE GOALKEEPER IS IN THE GOAL CREASE.
1C. An attacking player makes incidental contact with the goalkeeper at the same time a goal is scored.
==> Goal is disallowed. The official in his judgment may call a Minor penalty on the attacking player. The announcement should be, "No goal due to interference with the goalkeeper."

3: PLAYER PUSHES, SHOVES, OR FOULS ANOTHER PLAYER INTO THE GOALKEEPER, WHO IS IN OR OUT OF THE CREASE.
A. The attacking player, after having made a reasonable effort to avoid contact, makes contact with the goalkeeper at the time a goal is scored.
==> Goal is allowed.

I.e. make contact in the paint … no goal. Except if pushed into the goalie, in which case you need to make a reasonable effort to avoid contact.

Close call though.

by AlienDev on Feb 7, 2012 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah but the problem is, the puck crossed the line after the interference. Gaborik made contact before the “goal” was scored. And some have said that’s when the whistle blew.

I don't see

how they can say Gaborik was trying to stop, citing the snow as evidence. The snow only started to appear about a foot and a half before the crease. That’s not nearly enough when going at full speed.

great game

except what is parise thinking in trying to go for the goal – brain fart on his part, and he didn’t even get back to cover the guy who actually scored for the rangers.

Fayne – quick watch on the pk – this guy has no clue – he needs to sit, there was many times the ranger was just sitting there with a stick on the ice waiting to shoot/tip it in.

Honestly bring up urbom and sit fayne or salvador – these two belong in the ahl. once tallinder, both fayne and salvador can sit.

uhh

if best is being a 7th D man – then so be it, but the guy makes so bone headed plays too – and i’ve watched him on the pk – he’s terrible – he needs more coaching, and better game sense and positioning.

If we want to win the cup – we can’t afford mediocrity in the defense

I thought Salvador had one of his better games

Lightyears above how he played last week against the rangers when he was falling all over the place. As for Fayne, ive seen him play much worse. Foster was the guy who had me peeing my pants in the third with 4 minutes left.

Please don’t forget Volchenkov, in my opinion he was our best player after Marty tonight.

There is no cool aid? What’s your proof that Fayne is bad? Is it that he doesn’t put up very many points?

There’s a lot more to a dman’s game then that. You call him out on the PK, but last time I checked they were 100% tonight, and I remember saying “good job fayner” at least twice.

Fayne goes up against tough competition regularly and comes out at least even or better a majority of the time. He’s never going to be a 1st pairing kinda guy, but I could see him, in the future, playing on a pairing with Larsson just because he’s so solid and would be a good, steady complement to a star player (hopefully). He’s got 2nd pairing potential though.

by skly27 on Feb 7, 2012 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

Outside of the dumb penalty on Bryce

I thought Fayne played very well and Salvador was kinda a nonfactor I thought, but in tonight’s game that’s pretty good stuff

My question to rangers fans who think we lucked out is,

If you guys are so great, with a “depth scoring” team, then why did it take till the final six seconds for you to “score.”

If they say that it was all Marty, then I say, “But I thought he was all washed up?”

Salvador - Game overview

To say that Salvador belongs in the AHL is extremely ignorant and testament to your lack of hockey knowledge(whoever that was). So baseless I don’t even need to address it any further.

Anyway. The Devils were the far superior team for the first 35 or-so minutes of this game. Beyond that, this was a pretty boring and sloppy performance by both teams for the final half of the game. Looked like a bit of fatigue may have crept into the Devils game in the last half. Not good news with a good St. Louis team coming into the Rock on Thursday.

As for the non – goal, I am only partially in agreement with the call. Gaborik puts himself in the crease before Volchenkov ever makes the contact which pushes Gaborik into Marty. Beyond that, I was under the impression there was a rule which called for something like “The goaltender being awarded the opportunity to make the save without being impeded” where the referee can call the goal off but not give a penalty. I believe THAT is what should have occurred as, from my limited view of the play, it didn’t look like a clear penalty on Gaborik.

by CMelsDevils on Feb 7, 2012 10:51 PM EST reply actions

Gaborik made no attempt to stop and threw his elbow out to make sure Marty went down

Without the elbow push, maybe it gets let go, but he obviously and purposely tried to take Marty out of the play in his crease. Blueshirt Banter is calling it one of the worst calls (non-calls) in NHL history. Sour grapes LMAO!

by J-Nasty on Feb 7, 2012 11:23 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Thats what I was saying earlier

there wouldn’t have been a call if he didn’t come in high with his elbow up. To me he looked very aware of his situation. It didn’t look like he moved at all from Volchenkov pushing him
