What can we expect down the stretch for the New Jersey Devils?

Can the Devils team continue to win and climb in the standings?

There are about two full calender months left in the hockey season. The New Jersey Devils are on a five game winning streak and will face a St. Louis Blues team that has the same number of wins as them. For those of you who are unaware; the Devils are still a bubble team. They have a 6 point cushion from the Florida Panthers, which would drop them out of playoff contention. However, the Washington Capitals have 60 points and are the leader of the South East division, so both the Panthers and the Capitals would need to gain points if either team would want to make a run at a seeding outside being division leader.

I'm not going to summarize playoff scenarios in this article. I will break down how the Devils have scored against different divisions and what this means for the Devils playoff chances. Feel free to read a little pre-game material after the jump. (Big chart to look at if you are feeling lazy)

Star-divide

The Devils have 15 home games left to play and 14 games where they need to travel. This doesn't concern me because the Devils will not have to travel further West than the Central Time Zone. The traveling will be light for the Devils which is good because the Devils have a fairly tough schedule left to play. The Devils have two games against each western division, six against the South East, seven against the North East, and 11 Atlantic division games. 19 of these games are against playoff teams.

Whenever you are looking at the final stretch before playoffs, it is important to look at the remaining schedule and see how you did against the teams you have left to play. So, I compiled the goals against and the goals for the Devils for each team, and then added up the totals for division and conference. Below is the table:

New Jersey Devils Goal Differentials through 53 games

Western Conference

West_gf-ga_medium

Of the six Western Conference games the Devils have to play, only two are against teams we already played, the San Jose Sharks and the Colorado Avalanche. The Devils were embarrassed in Colorado, 1-6 and lost to the Sharks 3-4. Hopefully the Devils will be able to get revenge against the Avalanche in their own building. If it means anything, the Devils are undefeated against Central teams, so hopefully that trend can continue. However, the Blues and the Red Wings are two of the best teams in the West. All in all, the Western Conference games will not be as important because it won't give up points to other Eastern Conference teams. One small note, the Devils have a .86 goal differential ratio to Western Conference teams.

Eastern Conference

East_gf-ga_medium

South East Division

The Devils have a record of 11-4-0 against this division. Only the Capitals and the Panthers are legitimate playoff contenders at this point in time, so the Devils should take a majority of the points against these teams. Side note: it's good to see Winnipeg doing "well" in their first season in Canada, it's great for the NHL to have a continuously sold out arena.

North East Division

The Devils play the easy North East teams, Canadiens and Sabre, only once more each. The Devils have one game against the Bruins. This game will be a huge measuring stick for the playoffs. The Bruins have flat out dominated the Devils and if they want to be legitimate cup contenders, they need a win against Boston for their own confidence. The Devils have two games remaining against each bubble team (Maple Leafs and Senators). These games will be large determinants in who makes the playoffs. They aren't necessarily "must wins", but they are definitely circled on Peter DeBoer's schedule.

Atlantic Division

The Devils have three more games to play against the New York Rangers. Needless to say, these games will be extremely hard games. If the Devils take 3 points in those three games, I would be surprised. The Devils then have two games against the Penguins and the Flyers. These games will have a huge impact on the final seeding in the conference. Personally I hope the Devils end up getting sixth in the conference because then they will end up playing either the Panthers or the Capitals. The Devils should be able to win half of the games against the Flyers and Penguins. That leaves the Devils with four games against the Islanders. The Islanders are 6-2-2 in their last ten games and are quietly rising in the basement of the East. I would normally say that these games should be easy, but they may be tough if the Islanders stay hot. The Devils are 8-5-0 in the Atlantic and hopefully they can continue to improve upon this record.

With 29 games remaining, there is a very good chance that the Devils will end up playing into late April. Therefore, I'll ask a question every fan is debating: Will the Devils make the playoffs? and if so, where will the Devils be seeded?

Less is more

I think the Devils will end up finishing fifth, which would/could mean going up against a division rival in the first round. We’ve owned one of those (Pens) and been hosed by the other (Flyers) recently but I don’t fancy playing either of them in the first round. I’d much prefer the Devils to finish sixth.

Playing the SE in the first round would be wonderful. The Panthers would give us a hard time much like Carolina did a few years back, but overall facing anyone from down South would be a blessing.

Still early.

I think we finish fifth, I would prefer sixth for obvious reasons. Playing the winner of the SE conference would be nice.

I believe we finish fifth, maybe possibly get into fourth by the skin of their teeth. Facing a southeast team would give the team some good momentum for a run but we have to play Boston and Philly better. Who knows maybe the Isles will sneak in the playoff back door with the way they’re playing

Good summary of the rest of the year.

I voted for 4th/ 5th.

Right now, the Devils are playing as well as a division leader should. But will it be the Devs, the Rangers, the Flyers, or Pittsburgh? I don’t know. It’s a close enough contest that it could in any direction.

The Rangers have a big advantage because of their first-half success but I’m skeptical that they can maintain it. If they get 2 pts over the next two games (equalizing the games played to the present for the other teams) , they’re still only 6 pts ahead of Philly and 8 ahead of the Devils.

Division lead

While it is definitely a long shot to take over the division lead, it;s not impossible. With 3 games left against the Rangers, if we can get 4 points out of the 6, that would be a big boost. If the Devils can continue to develop their game, not to mention get Zajac in the lineup and back to speed, we are going to be a pretty good hockey team.

I see the Devils finishing right where they are now, 5th place, but I think the options are wide open. I don’t however anticipate them dropping any lower than 6th.

Blues fan here.

Anybody mind if we have a little SLGT road trip over here for tonight’s first period? Talk some hockey, share some jabs, watch our teams and stare in collective amazement at Cam Janssen’s penalty-box sittin’ skills?

For the second, we’d head back over to our house for a GDT and welcome you all to join us before moving to our respective corners for the third period.

I’m putting this out there in no official capacity for SLGT. As you will see in the staff section at the bottom of our page, we have many Plagers. But I’m not one of them.

I once shot a man just to see him die...then I got distracted and missed it.

Of the six Western Conference games the Devils have to play, only two are against teams we already played, the San Jose Sharks and the Colorado Avalanche.

Um, we don’t play San Jose twice this season. The three Western teams we get home-and-home are Dallas and Los Angeles (season series already complete) and Colorado (one game remains).

We still have matchups with Anaheim and Vancouver as far as the West Coast teams go. The Devils don’t leave the Eastern Time Zone again this year — they play at Detroit the final week of the season, but they’re EST/EDT as well.
