Who else will join Stefan Matteau as part of the New Jersey Devils' 2012 NHL Draft class? (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)
Good morning and welcome to the second day of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Today, teams will make their selections from the second round to the seventh and final round of the draft. The second round should start at 10 AM EST, as that is when television coverage will begin on the NHL Network. If you do not have the NHL Network, then you can follow the draft on the NHL Draft Tracker on their website. You'll want to be quick about it as the picks are made much more quickly today. Each of the six rounds won't take four hours like the first round.
The New Jersey Devils will make six selections today. They'll be drafting 60th overall (second round), 90th overall (third round), 96th overall (fourth round), 135th overall (fifth round), 150th overall (fifth round), and 180th overall (sixth round). The likelihood of any players drafted this late making it to the NHL is slim. However, just look at Adam Henrique (third rounder, 82nd overall in 2008) or Mark Fayne (fifth rounder, 155th overall in 2005) as evidence that it is not impossible. The Devils should use these picks to shore up their other holes in the system and possibly take a few chances on some guys. Who knows, maybe the thrown dart will get close to the target?
The Devils drafted Stefan Matteau last night with the 29th overall pick. Tom wrote a post with some analysis and opinion about the pick. Please feel free to comment about Matteau there. This post is for comments about anything that happens during the draft today such as trades and other picks by other teams. I'll do my best to get posts up for the Devils selections as they come. They'll be short at first, but I'll update them later in the day with more information. As usual, please follow the rules (keep it clean, keep it on-topic, keep it legal, etc.) and enjoy the second day of the NHL draft.
