I don't know how to feel about the Devils today.

Most of the media seem to think Zach Parise is signing with any team but New Jersey. Martin Brodeur hired an agent. It is also 96 degrees outside, so it is tough to do anything to get my mind off tomorrow.

Tomorrow is July 1st. For most Americans, all that means is three days to Independence Day. But we, the community of In Lou We Trust, do not think that way.

July 1st is a hockey day. It is the start of free agency. It is the day when the future of franchises can be determined. Signings determine whether teams choose to rebuild, stay the course, or make small moves that they believe can bring the Stanley Cup to their respective state or city.

July 1st is a day of hope. I need a bit of that right now.

In many ways, we all knew it was coming. I never believed that Lou would sign Parise during the season because it is not his way. I still believe that Zach enjoyed playing in New Jersey, wants to be a captain, and knows he can be the new face of a franchise in financial flux. But that doesn't mean his best intentions are with our beloved team. After all, I only have belief.

And what of Marty? Who can imagine him playing for another team? All I can say to Lou is "don't mess this one up".

Steve Politi wrote that if Brodeur leaves, it will be the saddest day in franchise history.

Now, I do not believe Marty will leave, and, to an extent, I think Zach wants to be a New Jersey Devil.

It's just that, as a fan, it is difficult to have confidence at times. Confidence is a scary word when you realize you have no control over a team.

I guess this is why we trust Lou to make it all work.
