2012 NHL Free Agency- Martin Brodeur Re-Signs With the Devils

Per Renaud Lavoie of RDS, Martin Brodeur's agreed to a 2 year $9 million deal with the Devils. The breakdown of the deal hasn't been released yet however. Because it's an over 40 contract, Marty's cap hit will be equal to his annual salary. Hence the breakdown of the deal is quite important, as it will determine his cap hit for next season.

Some Thoughts on the Re-Signing

My concern with this deal is that it's a multi-year 35+ contract. Of course, we know what we're getting. Brodeur should at least be a serviceable starter at this point in his career. However, if he does get hurt and plays like a below average goalie, the contract is impossible to move- which means the Devils are more or less stuck with him for the next two years. That's the worst part, because when he's been hurt, he's been at his worst. When he's healthy, he's been much better.

As for the salary, my guess is that recent goaltenders signing for big money (namely Pavelec) have driven up the market for goalies.

Of course, the two year deal also has its benefits. It means the Devils have more time on the proverbial "doomsday clock" to deal with their goaltending issues- whether it be acquiring a young goalie to back up Marty for the next two years, or for a goaltending prospect like Keith Kincaid or Scott Wedgewood to develop in the AHL.

It's not that bad a signing if you ask me. The two years on a 35+ contract seem abit binding, but to me, it doesn't seem like it's going to bite the Devils in the rear end (like Rolston's contract)

More on this as this develops. Feel free to use this thread to discuss Marty's return.
