Pass: A reasonable and deliberate attempt to get the puck to a teammate which maintains possession or results in a shot attempt. This excludes zone clears, dump-ins, and anything that is akin to a desperate swipe at a loose puck. If a player passes a puck into space or off the boards, it finds a teammate, and it appears it was done deliberately, that shall be a pass. When in doubt, common sense will prevail.
What you see below is a chart illustrating pass completions, pass attempts, and pass percentages for each player in all three zones. A pass that goes across a zone or two will be marked as occurring in the zone it originates from.
Each completed pass that results in a shot taken by a teammate counts as one “shot attempt generated” or “SAG” in the chart below. This is tracked to attempt to determine which teammates are better at generating opportunities to shoot.
Overall, this was a very good game passing-wise. The defenseman were all at least 75% in their own zone. Marek Zidlicky had one of his stronger games this season, especially in the offensive zone, completing 7 of 9 passes and generating 6 shot attempts. Adam Larsson had the highest pass percentage over the three zones and seemed more confident in playing the puck. Eric Gelinas played quite well for his first game and helped to generate 2 shot attempts.
It was overall strong play from the forwards, but a few struggled. Most notably, Adam Henrique wasn't his usual sharp self, misfiring of several passes and only going 3 for 8 in the offensive zone. He still managed to generate 2 shot attempts, but these were some of his worst numbers by far.
Michael Ryder was perfect on every pass tonight, generating 3 shot attempts as well. The line of Andrei Loktionov, Jarmomir Jagr, and Patrik Elias was very effective, generating a combined 11 shot attempts between them. But the player that created the most offense? Danius Zunrus! He generated 8 shot attempts. 8!
I'm going to take a look at the first 10 games later today, so I will post that separately. Is there anything you'd like me to look specifically? Let me know!
