Albany Notes:

  • Seth Helgeson signed an ATO with Albany earlier this week. He has yet to play with the Devils, but he did have a successful career with the Minnesota Gophers as a stay-at-home defensemen for four years.
  • Keith Kinkaid was recalled to New Jersey yesterday after Hedberg was injured in practice earlier this week. He backed up Brodeur last night.
  • Albany currently sits in 11th place in the Eastern Conference of the AHL. They are four points behind the 8th seed with just six games left in the season. Their games last weekend did not help their push to the post season at all.
  • In a 3-in-3 weekend, the Albany Devils had a hard time. They went 0-2-1.
    • On April 5 Albany fell to Providence 4-1. The only goal from the Devils came from Jon Merrill - his first pro goal.
    • In a 4-0 loss to Wilkes Barre Scranton, Jeff Frazee made 30 saves.
    • April 7 saw a bit more offence in a 3-2 shootout loss to Rochester. Reid Boucher scored his third goal since arriving in Abany and Jean-Sebastien Berube scored his first goal of the season. In what seems to be the Devil way lately, Albany outshot the Amerks 41-23.

Playoff Notes:

  • Artur Gavrus scored last night in a 4-3 victory over the Plymouth Whalers. His game winner brought Owen Sound Attack into a 2-2 tie in the series. He had a goal and two assists this week.
  • Maxime Clermont has helped the Elmira Jackals make the ECHL playoffs. They earned the 5th place spot in the East are facing the number four Florida Everblades. After letting in five goals in the first playoff game, he did not play last night in a 2-1 overtime loss.
  • Stefan Matteau had an assist in Blainville-Boisbriand's 2-1 victory over Val-D'or. That win completed the sweep and they are now waiting to see what team they will face in the QMJHL semi-finals. Matteau has three goals, five assists, and twelve penalty minutes in nine playoff games, so far.
  • After a 4-3 overtime loss last night, the Ben Thomson and the Kitchener Rangers trail the London Knights 3-1 in their current playoff series.
  • The Kamloops Blazers eliminated Damon Severson and the Kolowna Rockets from the playoffs last night. They were swept in the series, but three of the four games were decided by one goal. Severson had an awesome season for the Rockets - the defensemen had 52 points in the regular season and ten in the playoffs.

Prospect Spotlight:

The star this week was Stefan Matteau. He was sent down to the QMJHL for the playoffs after playing the beginning of the season in New Jersey and he has done nothing but help Blainville-Boisbriand. They have gone 8-1 in the playoffs so far and Matteau has three goals and five assists. The team earned their spot in the semi-finals after completing the sweep of Val-D'or last night.

That's it for the update this week. I've been asking this for a few weeks now, but with the recent drop in production from Albany, do you think they have it in them to squeeze into the playoffs? What do you think Seth Helgeson can do to help the Devils? Which playoff performance has impressed you the most? Feel free to discuss anything prospect related in the comments section below. Thanks for reading!
