4/18 Prospect Update: Albany and More are Eliminated

Bruce Bennett

The update this week looks at the many prospects eliminated from the playoffs along with the end of the Albany season approaching.

This week was a disappointing one for the New Jersey prospects. All but one prospect was eliminated from the playoffs and the Albany Devils saw all hopes of the post season crushed in a very unsatisfying weekend. On that note, keep reading to see an update on all individual stats along with an update on the season in Albany and other notes.

*Players in italics have been eliminated from the playoffs

Albany Notes:

  • Damon Severson signed an ATO with Albany. You can expect to see him play this weekend.
  • Seth Helgeson played his first two games with the Devils last weekend. Although he was kept off the score sheet and only had two shots on goal, he was not on the ice for any goals against, either.
  • Alexander Urbom was called up to New Jersey yesterday as an emergency recall. It doesn't look like he will be in the line up tonight, but he has been practicing with the team.
  • Albany was mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. They went 0-3 last weekend. Here is a short recap of each game:
    • On Friday, Albany fell to Binghamton 5-3. Chris McKelvie scored the team's 9th shorthanded goal. Steve Zalewski and Eric Gelinas also scored. Matt Anderson set a team record by getting his 83rd assist with the team.
    • On Military Appreciation Night, Albany fell to Binghamton again - this time the score was 0-5. Scott Wedgewood struggled in goal turning away 24 of 29 shots.
    • In the final game of the weekend, Albany fell to Rochester 3-2. David Wohlberg and Mike Sislo scored with Jeff Frazee in net.
  • The Albany Devils have three games remaining in the season. They all take place this weekend.
  • On a side note: New Jersey and Albany have been following similar bad trends this season.
    • While Albany has not had as long of a losing streak as New Jersey, both find themselves on the outside of the playoff race with serious struggles in the shootout.
    • New Jersey has gone 2-7 in the shootout while Albany has gone 3-12.
    • Both teams have been consistently outshooting their opponents but still finding themselves in the losing column.
    • It isn't all bad news, though. Both teams have been very successful scoring shorthanded - New Jersey has scored an NHL leading eleven while Albany has scored nine.

Playoff Notes:

  • The Elmira Jackals (Maxime Clermont), Owen Sound Attack (Artur Gavrus), and Kitchener Rangers (Ben Thomson) were all eliminated from the playoffs this week.
  • The only remaining prospect in the playoffs is Stefan Matteau. Blainville-Boisbriand will face Baie-Comeau in the semi-finals. Both teams meeting swept their opponents in the last round, so it should be a great match-up.

That's it for the update this week. Does it worry you that New Jersey and Albany seem to be falling into similar rough patches this season? What are your thoughts on Severson signing an ATO with only three games left in the season? Do you think Matteau and Blainville-Boisbriand have what it takes to take the title in the QMJHL? Feel free to comment on any thoughts you may have about the New Jersey prospects. Thanks for reading!
