NJ Devils Scoring Chances: Weekly Post: Part 6

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

Detailing the game by game Devils scoring chance results for a group of games, as we work towards completing a catalog all of the games in the 2013 season. This week, we will cover the Devils at the Rangers, 4.21.13.

This week we will just look at a very disappointing recent game. Sunday was one of the worst efforts from our team in recent memory, and unfortunately the meaningful part of the Devils season came to a close. At first, I thought the scoring chance numbers for this game really do not tell a lot of the story, and, in some ways, they don't. I realized as I was putting this all together that the chance results also do tell the tale of the game to some extent. The Devils came out ahead by one at even strength chances, 11-10. However, one of those chances came in a 6v5 opportunity, for starters. I am not sure how to score a 6v5 chance - right now I have no mechanism in place to handle one, so I called it a 5v5 chance. Incidentally, you can see this by the fact that under Brodeur's individual results, the totals are 10-10. (Aside: If anyone knows whether 6v5 should be kept as its own category, or how it should be tracked, please let me know).

Now, coming out dead even in scoring chances is really not that good when you take into account that the Devils were trailing literally from the first minute onward. Next, the chance results sort of show how stupidly the Devils played the game - how many dumb penalties they took, since the Rangers compiled a 5-0 advantage on their power play. I don't necessarily think this game was refereed well (and neither did the Devils, clearly), but that's neither here nor there. The one thing that isn't shown really clearly in the chance results is the lack of effort the Devils put into this game overall. I suppose that can be indirectly shown by the fact that they came out negative overall by a decent margin in a game they trailed dramatically throughout. In a game they needed to win. Yeah, I guess it does also show their lack of effort. So, there you have the story of the game, rmore or less, as shown through your scoring chance totals.
