How Much Devils Passion for '13-'14?

This morning, I found myself watching a bit of the NHL Network. Given that it's the summer time, the NHLN airs random classic games, including the all-star games. Today, I was caught up in the one from 2004. And right as I tuned it, the announcer (who I believe was Gary Thorne) was talking about how passionate Devils fans. He was discussing how it was the Devils fans, with their consistent and powerful drive, who were able to successful vote in key Devils (Niedermayer, Stevens/Rafalski, and Marty) into the All Star game. It reminded me of an article written by our own John Fischer where he praised Devils fans for their support and drive in getting Marty to be the on the cover of EA '14. He stated that it was a testament to the passion here in Jersey for our team. I couldn't agree more. I have always known that our fan base, while smaller than most, is incredibly loyal and passionate. Anyone who attends a home game can see it. We can match the passion of any other NHL team.

But with the recent events (summers of'12 and '13), it has been awfully depressing. After the incredible high of the playoff run, we have seen the two faces of our franchise and a solid winger leave, and with them, a degree of hope. And I wonder: will the passion for the team last? Especially if Lou (G-d Forbid) fails to sign any new UFA'a, will the people still show up to games? Will the excitement still be there? Look, I know that Devils fans will always be Devils fans, but how excited will they be?

I, for one, am troubled by the events of the summer, and am skeptical for the upcoming season. I'm obviously jacked for the beginning of the NHL season like every year, but that excitement doesn't go without a bit of sincere fear. My hope is that Devils fans unite and come out to games in droves. We have to show our team that we'll be there. But, realistically...
