So here is my idea. We all know that the game is kid of lame now, and the new fantasy draft idea makes it less appealing to me than East vs West or North America vs Europe. Now we have 4 more or less separate divisions. The new all star teams would be by each of those divisions.
With 4 spate teams there would have to be more than one game. The all star event is already two days with the skills competition, so I propose they have the skills competition and a frozen four style tournament. Day 1 will have two East vs West division games, and then the winners of those games play each other on day 2 after a skills competition earlier in the day. So it is possible that the championship game is all East or all West, but that's okay the all star game is all for fun.
Now 80 players filling out 4 teams is probably too many so the games would have to be altered. They could be 40 minute games with a smaller bench. But I like the idea of having 4 on 4. A team could get by with 9 forwards 4 defensemen and 2 goalies. But even better still more open ice means more goals, the best part of all star games.
How does this make the all star game worth watching again? We need to make it mean something. There has to be a worthwhile trophy presented to the winning division. Not some lame "dodge ram mvp" trophy and a free truck like I remember Joe Sakic winning one year, but a real year end awards caliber trophy. It has to be named after a person not an nhl sponsor. Gretzky would be an obvious choice but I just feel that he is too recent. I propose that the winner of the all star tournament be awarded the Howe Trophy. Who is better than Mr. Hockey? A Canadian player who played for an American team, all the bases are covered. This is really what the all star game needs, a meaning for winning the game. If there was only East and West, that's only 2 people that can win the trophy. However with 4 teams I think that is enough competitors to make it interesting. The original six era made the cup entertaining with only six different teams being able to win, so four should be fine.
So what do you think? Spread this around the net maybe the NHL will consider this idea.
