John Quennville Named to WHL Super-Series Roster

This article is coming a little late, with the first game of the CHL's Super Series happening tomorrow, but being named to the roster is still a significant accomplishment for the New Jersey Devils' 1st round pick from the last draft, and an opportunity to take a look at his season so far.

Introduction

For those you who aren't familiar with the Super Series, it's an annual series of games between the respective "All-Star" squads of the CHL leagues and of the top Russian Junior players. This is a North-American vs. Russian type competition, and the CHL teams do not play each other, but rather take turns playing a pair of games against the Russians. There are no special rules or conditions in the games, and the teams are normal size.

What Can We Read Into The Selection?

Though Quennville has put up 1.33 points-per-game in an injury-delayed first portion of the season, he has done so on a Brandon Wheat Kings team that has put up a ridiculous total of 100 goals in 20 games (in the WHL, only Kelowna has more than 72!). That Quennville was included in the WHL's All-Star team, and especially that only one other Wheat King, line mate Jayce Hawryluk (who was selected only two picks after his partner in crime, Quennville) made the team. This indicates that not only has the Devils prospect been producing, but also that he has not been a passenger in doing so. This also leaves the overwhelming likelyhood that on a Brandon squad that seems to be playing a run-and-gun game (as evidenced by both their high number of goals for, and their 60 goals against, which is the most goals allowed by a division-leading team by nearly 20), Quennville has not lost the solid 2-way play that made him a first round draft pick.

Conclusion

After seeing how much his team as a whole is producing, I had serious doubts about John Quennville's great point totals, but this selection reassured me that he has, indeed, been a very good player thus far. The WHL squad is playing in the first two-game series with the Russian team (which take place 8:00 PM EST tomorrow the 10th and 7:00 PM EST on the 11th, and can be found on any of These Outlets), so in the next couple of days, I will either update or comment on this article regarding Quennville, and where the games indicate he stands among the WHL's brightest stars.
