Fluton Shinzawa wrote today that Brian Gibbons of the Penguins may make it to UFA. I am not that familiar with the player but he seems to fit a need. I have commented before that I believe one of the real killers last season was the lack of offense from the fourth line, the pressbox, and from the AHL players promoted to replace CBGB when they were injured or promoted due to other promotions. He seems to be a player that can offer more offense on the fourth line and possibly play higher in the lineup.
Gibbons does not have much of a track record in the NHL (41 games). But he is a player who has scored at Boston College (Lou loves New England players) and in the AHL and spent some time playing with Crosby. He only made $550k this year. He has speed and kills penalties. So, to compare him to one current Devil UFA, he is 5 years younger than Gionta, one inch taller than Gionta, more offensively skilled, affordable, was more productive at comparable levels, and may be eager for an opportunity with a team that is looking for some offense.
Check out this highlight from this past season in the AHL playoffs. Thoughts?
