(Looking for the game preview for tonight's game against Edmonton? Go here. Thanks.)

For the first time since November 22, the New Jersey Devils are no longer in first in the Atlantic Division for these weekly snapshots.  I know some will be thinking that the Devils' loss in Calgary contributed to this; but as I pointed out last Sunday, the Pittsburgh Penguins only needed to sweep the week to do it since they played one more game than the Devils.  Well, the Penguins went ahead and did exactly that.  The big difference is, of course, the lead in the division.

In the meantime, the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers, and New York Islanders had mixed weeks. Enough to stay where they were, but not enough to move up - which the Rangers and Islanders need to do and quickly.

Well, that was an entertaining 2010 Winter Olympics hockey tournament.  However, that's now in the past.  It's time to return focus on the NHL and the first week of what should be a busy March.  Right away, there are games and the NHL trade deadline on Wednesday.  The New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins will both hope the break does them well to be more consistently good. The Philadelphia Flyers will hope the break doesn't break their stride as they won their last 4 games. The  New York Rangers and  New York Islanders hope they'll come right off the break to pick up points and jump back in the playoff race in the Eastern Conference.

NJ Devils & Atlantic Division Weekly Snapshot: 2/7 - 2/14

February 14 will be a special day for many: it is the last day of games before the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics takes place and the league goes on a two week break.  Rather having a one day week next Sunday, I'm stretching this one to eight days.

The New Jersey Devils continue to struggle, slump, stumble, and other words that don't begin with 's' with respect to dropping games. This past week was another losing record and by virtue of the Pittsburgh Penguins dropping one game and the Devils miraculously winning one, they remain in first.  This will not continue if the Devils continue to lose, the Penguins can definitely catch the Devils this week.  I may emphasize in my recaps about how the losses happen (heartbreaking blowing of a lead against LA, out-and-out terrible against Toronto, running into a wall of a goalie at MSG), but the standings don't care about the how - it's just results.  And they haven't been good.

The Atlantic Division as a whole didn't have a great week, though. The Penguins were the only team to manage a winning record with two wins and a loss.  The New York Rangers snapped their losing streak with two wins, but still lost the other two games they had so they didn't catch the Philadelphia Flyers, whose one win was enough to stay up in the East's top eight.  The New York Islanders have the worst situation as they have lost all three games last week, now seven in a row.

The New Jersey Devils began the week with a bad loss to the New York Islanders, snapped their then three-game losing streak with a shutout win over the Florida Panthers, got beat by the Montreal Canadiens, and then got revenge over the Islanders on Saturday night.  With the Florida win alone, mathematically the Devils were going to stay in first in the Atlantic Division.  The Pittsburgh Penguins only had two games and only won one of them.  The win over the Islanders puts the Devils' lead back at 6 over the Penguins and 14 ahead of the third place (and getting hotter) Philadelphia Flyers.  The New York Rangers' and New York Islanders' losses tonight doesn't hurt them too much in the standings, but it allowed the Philadelphia Flyers to leap ahead into third in the division thanks to their three game winning streak.  It's still a fight below second place in the Atlantic Division, and all three are in the playoff mix.

The New Jersey Devils suffered something they haven't done since the middle of November: a losing weekly record. The Devils went 1-3 (or 1-2 if you consider the Tampa Bay game as January 8, though it was finished on January 10) and saw some of their lead over the Pittsburgh Penguins disappear.  Not that Penguins fans should be entirely pleased as they got hammered in Vancouver last night and ultimately tied with the New York Islanders for picking up the most points last week with 4.  The New York Rangers earned 1 point out of a possible 6 to still remain a healthy 14 points behind New Jersey, the Philadelphia Flyers weren't perfect but the Islanders were so they switched.  Actually, the Islanders won both of their games: 6-0 over Detroit and a shootout win over Buffalo; they had the best week.

Once again, the New Jersey Devils stay at the top of the Atlantic Division and technically have won all their completed games this week.  The key word is completed, as the Tampa Bay game was postponed to Sunday due to a technical issue with the lights at the Prudential Center.  The Pittsburgh Penguins snap their losing streak but come out at .500 with a 2-2 week; while they stay in fourth in the East and second in the division, the Rangers are coming up fast.  The New York Rangers have surged up to sixth in the East and are only 7 points behind Pittsburgh.  The Rangers aren't the only one moving up in the NHL, though. The Philadelphia Flyers are roaring back up the standings with 3 wins last week, and the New York Islanders are picking up points as well.  The Flyers are just 1 pointsout of eighth in the conference, and the Islanders only 2 points back.

The Devils are the only safe team with a 6 point lead on Pittsburgh and at least 13 on the Rangers and the rest of the division. Since everyone won tonight, no one moved tonight, though Philadelphia got one point ahead of the Islanders earlier in the week.

It's a brand new year and the New Jersey Devils have kicked it off with something new: a gap over all four Atlantic Division teams while sitting at the top of the Eastern Conference.  The Devils had a successful last week of 2009, a successful first game of 2009, and were helped out massively by an absolutely terrible week by the Pittsburgh Penguins.  The Penguins lost all four of their games last week.  Since they have done so well up until last week, they got a commanding 10 point lead over the third-place New York Rangers.  Yet, the Devils have a 6 point gap over the Penguins to kick off the new year.

Also, 2010 begins with an interesting mix in the bottom 3.  The Rangers, New York Islanders, and Philadelphia Flyers are all within 2 points of each other. The Rangers sit in eighth in the Eastern Conference; but three teams including the Islanders are only one point back, and the Flyers are in twelfth place at only two back.  It's going to be an interesting race down there for certain.  Expect lots of movement throughout the week.

NJ Devils & Atlantic Division Weekly Snapshot: 12/28 - 1/2/2010

Prior to last night, the New Jersey Devils were at the very top of the NHL.  They had the best record and they did it with a massive and historic win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Then last night, the Washington Capitals brought the Devils down to Earth. Even prior the loss, it was apparent that the Devils' position wasn't all that safe as the Penguins also had 53 points on Saturday night.  Going into today's games, the Devils still lead the Atlantic, but the Penguins can overtake them with a win tonight (they play Toronto, who sucks, so it's probably going to be a win for the Pens). As for the three bottom teams, the New York Rangers, New York Islanders, and Philadelphia Flyers had good results in the last week which has them rising up a little bit in the Eastern Conference.  The gap between the top two and the bottom three has been narrowed to at least 13 points.
