Tom Gulitti tweeted this afternoon that the New Jersey Devils signed University of New Hampshire forward Mike Sislo to a two year entry level contract. Here is Sislo's bio and stats at the UNH website. Sislo had a big 2010-11 season with 15 goals and 33 assists as a senior. He'll play out the rest of Albany's season. Update: The tweet link didn't work but Gulitti's got a post on it at Fire & Ice so I switched it with that. Sorry.
The link goes to the team's website. That's not news. But tomorrow, the team's website will be streaming the official opening of the "Mission Control" digital command center at the Prudential Center at 12 PM EST on Wednesday. Said opening will feature Matt Loughlin, other front office staff, and the owner himself, Jeff Vanderbeek. If you haven't noticed on Twitter yet, the team has named several Devils Generals (@DevilsGenerals) in an attempt to more directly link fan feedback to the organization. The Devils have set up a separate room, "Mission Control," for said generals to do that as well as monitoring Twitter, Facebook, and other media (e.g. blogs like this one). I await to see how effective this is, as to whether the fans respond well to the generals and whether the organization will hear them loud and clear. Thanks to the Devils organization for sending me the press release.
Via the SJ beat writer blog Working the Corners, David Pollack reports that the Devils have traded forwards Patrick Davis and Michael Swift to San Jose for former Devil Jay Leach and Steven Zalewski. Not a significant trade and one that might affect the Devils, but still a trade nonetheless. Editor's Take: Hark, it's the return of Jay Leach! But seriously, both players are on the final year of their two-way deals according to CapGeek: Leach's contract, Zalewski's contract.
This is a good post by Timo Seppa of Hockey Prospectus about the New Jersey Devils season so far. It touches on the same issues discussed at length here. I think the only major factor missing is just a horrible run of luck (it's touched on by the scoring part). But it's a recommended read. (Disclosure: I did contribute to the 2010-11 Hockey Prospectus with Seppa on the Devils chapter.) Note to Burnside and other outside journalists writing about the 10-11 Devils: this is how you do it.
Tom Gulitti reported earlier today at Fire & Ice that Corrente is out for 2-4 weeks for a shoulder injury sustained in a fight against Steve Downie in Friday's 5-2 win in Tampa Bay. Perhaps he will learn from this to fight less in the future. Perhaps.
Expect the #6 defenseman role to be locked by Mark Fayne, Anssi Salmela (up to 10 games before going through re-entry waivers), or someone else for a while. Feel free to make your argument in the comments. Please do not suggest Alexander Urbom - if he plays 3 more games, his ELC officially gets on New Jersey's already-bloated cap. Update: Urbom's 20, suggest him all you want.
Tom Gulitti heard from Zach Parise today and got some bad news. Parise's doctor has recommended that he stay away from skating until he's re-examined in March. Depending on how that goes, that could keep him out for the rest of the season. Personally, if this means the knee heals properly, then I'm fine with it. If it's a lost season, then there's no reason to rush Parise back with nothing to play for.
Tom Gulitti reports big news. Rolston will need surgery for a sports hernia. He will be out for 4-6 weeks and will go on long term injured reserve. The Devils will still play with 16 tonight, but will make roster decisions tomorrow. Yes, this only buys the Devils time, but Rolston on LTIR will free up more than enough space to replace all of the missing spots on the roster and give them a long time before having to make a permanent move.
I forgot to mention this yesterday, but MSG+ has released the TV schedule for this coming up season. All 82 regular season games will be broadcast by some means, which is good. In the short term, though, only the next two preseason games are on the TV schedule. And tomorrow's game is a Rangers broadcast. It's better than nothing. Hat-tip: Tom Gulitti.
