This was a surprise. Urbom had not played great, but I just don't get this move. Hopefully Rich Chere or Tom Gulitti can find out why this move was made. I will update later with any new info.
Per Tom Gulitti over at Fire & Ice, the Devils have given qualifying offers to David Clarkson, Mark Fraser, Tyler Eckford, Rod Pelley, Patrick Davis and Olivier Magnan-Grenier.
The Devils also did not qualify Brad Snetsinger and Myles Stoesz.
This move was expected and is standard procedure otherwise the restricted free agents would become unrestricted free agents without this qualifying offer. It will be interesting to see which of the 6 players will sign their qualifying offer, which of those will sign longer term deals and finally which players will head down the path of arbitration.
My first guess would be that Clarkson, Pelley & Fraser will be signed to 2/3 year deals with Clarkson obviously being the priority. Lamoriello has commented a few times on how Clarkson is one of his top priorities before 7/1 and I hope that they are able to come to terms quickly.
The other RFA's (Eckford, Magnan-Grenier & Davis) I would expect will either take the qualfying offer or be signed to short term 2 way deals as they have not challenged for spots on the Devils roster yet and will all likely start the year in Albany.
