Talking Red #150: Talking with Tom Gulitti

It's the 150th episode of Talking Red. Intentional or not, David Sarch interviews Tom Gulitti, the best New Jersey Devils beat reporter in the land about defensemen, lines, the trade deadline, and more.

Talking Red #87: Interview with Tom Gulitti

David Sarch is back hosting Talking Red and he interviewed Tom Gulitti, the Devils beat reporter at Fire & Ice and the Bergen Record about his work and, of course, the New Jersey Devils.

"The picks are not going determine that. You’re not going to just do this to get picks. Whatever...

"The picks are not going determine that. You’re not going to just do this to get picks. Whatever decision is made is going to be made because you feel that you can do certain things and not hurt yourself. All you have to do is go back to the Marty Brodeur year. Those are decisions that you make and you don’t worry about what people think."

Lou Lamoriello tells Tom Gulitti why he wouldn't make a trade just to get a second round pick. In this quote, I've bolded what I think Lou's philosophy is on any kind of draft-day deals - regardless if picks are involved.

NJ PHWA Boycotts NHL Award Voting in Protest

This is more insider stuff than anything else, but it's worth mentioning. Tom Gulitti posted at Fire & Ice why the NJ PHWA has withdrew their votes for the NHL awards. This is because the Islanders pulled Chris Botta's credentials during the season without any explanation from either the team, the NHL, or the PHWA, who did nothing about this at the national level. As Gulitti explains, it's a horrible precedent and could lead to other teams doing so. Hopefully, the PHWA at least gets the message. Good on the NJ, NY, and Long Island chapters to stand up for themselves.

Whoever It Is, Don't Expect Next New Jersey Devils Head Coach to Radically Alter the Team

In light of recent rumors and speculation about the New Jersey Devils head coaching search, I pick out a quote from Lou Lamoriello posted by Tom Gulitti to highlight that whoever will be hired won't change the team's main philosophies.

"The reason we got Alex Mogilny at that time was for similar reasons: what he could bring...

"The reason we got Alex Mogilny at that time was for similar reasons: what he could bring offensively with the shot he had and he could do almost individually at times, but still be a team player. I feel that Iyla can bring that sort of explosiveness and also I really believe strongly that he wants to win and he will fit in."

Lou Lamoriello, comparing the move to bring in Kovalchuk to his move about a decade ago to bring in Alexander Mogilny to New Jersey, as reported by Gulitti. In case you're wondering when the last time Lou made a move like this. Check out that post. Parise's excited, Kovalchuk's excited, Salmela's excited, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Lou's excited. New Jersey Devils Status as of Feb. 4 & 5, 2010: Excited.
